After a successful amateur career, which included three straight wins in the China Amateur Championship, Liang turned professional in 1999. Taking over the mantle of top Chinese golfer from his mentor Lian-wei Zhang, Liang became the first Chinese golfer to make the cut in a major championship (2008, Open Championship).
