Circolo Golf degli Ulivi Sanremo

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1932

Golf Club degli Ulivi, more commonly called San Remo, is perched above the city, in a picturesque valley that runs from the mountains to the sea, both of which are constantly in view. Here is a golf course that used to enthral and test the best in the game, and still puts up a very good challenge for golfers of all abilities.

Although not overly long at just over 5200 metres (5700 yds), this par-69 layout will test your full array of shot-making, while providing immensely scenic views, no matter where you are on the course. Many of the elevation changes are dramatic, with tee-shots played both up and downhill onto tree-lined fairways, several of them quite tight.

The usually small and subtly sloping greens are often defended with a bunker or two guarding the front of the putting surface. Among an excellent collection of par-3's, the very short 9th, only 85 metres from the tips, cost Bernhard Langer the 1982 San Remo Classic, when he ran up a 9 here.

This well-designed layout ensures walkers are not left exhausted after their round, although you'll certainly feel the leg muscles have had a good stretch. Beyond the course the mountain and Mediterranean views are at times breathtaking, while in the valley you'll see many terraces and greenhouses in which Sanremo's famous flowers (and now also vegetables) are grown.

As the name degli Ulivi ("of the olives") suggests, there are plenty of olive trees mixed in with the other tree varieties around the course. Like its not too distant "neighbour", the Monte Carlo Golf Club, here is a wonderfully historic, scenic and challenging golf course, with a wonderfully sited and very comfortable clubhouse.

Did you know?

The Golf Club degli Ulivi (San Remo) formerly hosted several Italian Open Championships and more recently the European Seniors Tour (see our Tournaments section >by Venue >San Remo).

Originally known as Matuzia, the town of Sanremo, was later renamed after San Romolo (in English Saint Romulus, in Ligurian San Rœmu). This former Bishop of Genoa and successor to St Syrus, was forced to flee from Genoa and later died in a cave he inhabitated close to what is now Sanremo.

The last 150 years saw this bustling fishing village transform into an elegant, world-renowned seaside resort. Princes, aristocrats, writers and art lovers came here to enjoy the warm climate, deep blue sea and intense scent of the area's flowers. San Remo, like nearby Monte Carlo, became famous for its Casino, as well as annually hosting the Italian Song Festival, and, perhaps most famously, for its flowers.

Grown in great quantities, flowers from Sanremo were exported all over the world, and are still much in evidence in the town's luxuriant gardens and colourful town parks. In the 20th century the town of San Remo became Sanremo. The old town is characterised by perched houses, steep streets, covered alleys, and little squares - a glimpse of Medieval times.
