Maidstone Club
The Maidstone Club is home to a championship golf course that ranks with some of the greatest in the United States. The revered oceanside West course is kept company by the nine-hole East course, which travels inland on its out-and-back routing.
Whether playing directly oceanside at the par-3 8th, par-4 9th and par-3 14th, or "lakeside" (alongside Hook Pond) at most of the other holes, waterscapes are continually in view as you journey out-and-back around the West course's 18 holes. In true links fashion, most of the layout is treeless, while prolific bunkering and sandy waste areas are much in evidence.
This duneland/marshside links is another in Willie Park Jr's catalogue of highly-rated designs. It provides a wonderful test for your all-round game, with many excellent holes to enjoy ... none more so than the short par-3 4th. Here you tee-off from an island in the middle of Hook Pond, or from the other bank, which is 200 yards away. From either tee, just water lies between you and the green.
Limited access: this private course is generally playable only by members and their invited guests.
Private club; visitors/guests may only play if hosted by a member.
Walking permitted at all times. Caddies available.
Good
In 1922 Willie Park Jr and his younger brother John designed most of Maidstone's West course (holes 4 thru' 15), utilising a spectacular 80-acre plot of beachside duneland acquired by the club on the Gardiner Peninsula. Earlier, in 1895, the brothers had laid out a course (much of today's East course), which John had constructed in 1899.
The 1922 expansion resulted in the club having two 18-hole courses, but this was reduced to the current 27-hole layout by the hurricane of 1938.
West course:
New York state's 9th best course (Golf Digest, 2023/24).
USA's 52nd best course (Golf Digest, 2023).
World's 50th best course (GOLF Magazine, 2023/24).
The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).
Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).
Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with five wins out of her last five starts on the LPGA Tour. Winning the Chevron Championship also brought the second major championship win of her career.
Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda's five wins in five starts, when he placed second at the Houston Open. Either side of that, he won The Arnold Palmer, The Players, and then The Masters and The Heritage.
Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.
Jim Fazio's original layout was much changed to create a modern Ryder Cup course ... now one of the Eternal City's (and Italy's) most revered.
