Silver Lakes Country Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1993

At the aptly named Silver Lakes Country Club it's no surprise that water hazards play an important part in your round. Two large and six small lakes progressively come into play as you journey round. You'll also get a chance to review the estate's many and varied housing styles, which line the opening four holes.

Water makes its first telling appearance at the short par-4 5th. Thereafter, the relatively flat and open terrain is home to an ever increasing number of water hazards, both hugging and splitting fairways, and protecting several greens. By the time you reach the par-5 14th you'll feel that there is far more water out here than "terra firma-fairway". After a brief respite, the water theme returns as play your approach shots to the long par-4 17th and par-5 18th.

Some "island" fairways will need to be hit along the way, while a shared island double-green awaits at the par-3 9th and par-5 18th holes. Wayward hitting from the tee will likely provoke something of a sinking feeling here at Silver Lakes, while the accurate target golfer will no doubt enjoy the inherent challenges of such a water-laden layout.

The extravagance and size of some of the housing, is a theme taken up and reflected in the size and roller-coaster nature of many of the greens. Designer Peter Matkovich has even thrown in a couple of boulder-strewn holes (at 6 and 7), adding to the variety of course design features employed here.

Did you know?

Alongside the estate housing, Silver Lakes can also boast many natural havens, home to a wide array of wildlife. Birds such as whydas, larks and grass owls inhabit the grassland areas, while a variety of animals, including mongoose, cape clawless otters and the aggresive giant African bullfrog, might also be seen.

Uniformity of housing styles, demanded on many real estate developments, was clearly not the business model here at Silver Lakes. It seems that every conceivable style of home has been built around the golf course including: modern, thatched, Tuscan, African, colonial, mansionesque, Disneyesque and traditional.
