Emirates (Majlis)
Emirates Golf Club (Majlis course): As the long-time standard bearer of golf in the Middle East, the magnificent Majlis course is undoubtedly a course that sits comfortably among the world's elite. Contrasting with its sister layout, the also excellent Faldo course, the Majlis is less exposed to the full-on views of the towering skyline of Dubai Media City and Dubai Marina. The Majli's serenely flowing landscape, in its early days an oasis in the desert, is now surrounded by the voracious property developments that define Dubai.
Karl Litten's terrific design includes plenty of undulation and elevation change, with 18 superb holes weaving their way between expansive sandy wastes and some original desert scrub ... reminders of what was here before the developers moved in. The most impressive of the layout's desert areas comes at the fabulous, uphill dog-legging par-4 8th hole.
The bunkering here, as you might expect, is excellent, while the greens are large and often prodigiously sloping. Wayward drives may not be too severely punished given the width of the fairways, but beware the presence of water, not least at the par-3 7th, one of the best short holes you'll play anywhere. With the par-4 9th and par-5 18th skirting either side of a small lake, and both finishing on the same (double) green, you'll certainly need a steady nerve on the tee and approach shots at the close of each nine-hole loop.
Booking early to play on the Majlis course is strongly advised; it may be one of Dubai's most expensive courses to play, but it is far and away the most sought after - most certainly the "crown jewel" of Dubai golf.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends. 8am and 1pm shotgun starts are sometimes used.
Must book in advance (well in advance during peak season). Maximum handicap: men 28, women 36. Proof of handicap required.
Credit cards accepted. Contact club for full details, discounts, packages, etc. [Last updated: 2019].
Non-metal spike facility. Golf carts are fitted with GPS. Golf carts not permitted on Majlis course 3 mths before Dubai Desert Classic (usually mid-Nov thru' Feb).
Excellent
Dubbed the 'desert miracle', The Majlis course was the first championship grass golf course to open in the Middle East, and is still arguably the best. It is the regular venue for the Dubai Desert Classic and the first course in the Middle East to host the Ladies European Tour. For more details see Top Golf Tournaments at Emirates GC.
The very distinctive clubhouse is modelled on an encampment of Bedouin tents, and is home to a superb 5-star restaurant, Le Classique. | The Majlis course takes its name from the arabic word for "meeting place".
