Port Elizabeth Golf Club

3-star: Good course – an enjoyable test for your game.

Est. 1890

Port Elizabeth Golf Club: Although overshadowed by the better known Humewood golf course in PE, the nearby Port Elizabeth Golf Club is also home to a thoroughly enjoyable and challenging course. In contrast to Humewood's classically open links-style layout, the Port Elizabeth course is more parkland in character.

Pines, palms and eucalyptus trees are liberally dotted around, providing definition to the well-spaced holes and creating a pleasantly natural feel throughout. Good-width fairways, a generous margin of light semi-rough and an absence of serious rough will provide big-hitters with plenty of encouragement, but your short game will need to be on song if a good score is to be carded.

The well-paced greens are often quite small, and usually well defended by strategically positioned bunkers, many of them nestling into small earth mounds.

Water comes into play only occasionally, but on three occasions it poses a serious threat - alongside the excellent par-5 8th, flanking the leftside of the green of the par-5 13th, and most threateningly of all at the tough par-3 17th.

Here at Port Elizabeth GC, in excellent contrast to the open links of Humewood, you will be able to enjoy one of the Eastern Cape's best parkland layouts - and maybe walk away with a prize or two (see Did You Know section below).

Did you know?

Port Elizabeth GC (also known as "The Hill"), was established in 1890 and took up residence at its current location in 1902. The PE Golf Club thrived as a national venue in the 1920's, with the SA Open and SA Amateur being hosted in 1921 and 1926. Jock Brews won both the SA Opens. The national Championship returned in 1931, this time with Jock's brother Sid, winning the SA Open title (see our Tournaments section >by Venue >Port Elizabeth).

Every year PE Golf Club hosts one of South Africa's biggest week-long Festivals of Golf, which draws amateur golfers from all over South Africa and many overseas visitors as well. See the club's own website for details.
