Where2Golf says:

Here in the historic and peaceful setting of the Rathsallagh Estate, you are greeted at the first hole by fabulous views over surrounding hills and farmland. This opening par-5 leads you down into the lush splendour of the grounds of Rathsallagh House, where wide open grassy spaces and beautiful mature woodland defines the course, and creates a marvellously natural golfing environment. Either side of the tightish fairways are two distinctly different cuts of semi-rough and rough. Balls that land in the former should be found without too much trouble, although you may find it that much harder to "go for the green". The longer rough is more penal, and swallows balls quite readily - definitely worth avoiding if you can. From the very intimidating par-5 6th hole to the par-4 10th water is seriously in play and good course management is essential. From the par-5 11th the easier-going, grassy parkland resumes, with a chance to card some good scores as you progress towards the superb closing hole - a long uphill par-4 leading to Rathsallagh's attractive clubhouse.

Special information about the club and / or the course

Rathsallagh's history goes back a long way. It was first listed in 1172-76 as a farm attached to the Abbey of Glendalough (from where St Patrick is said to have originated). However, the farm probably existed from as early as the 7th century, when Rathsallagh became a daughter house (paruchia) of the Abbey. By the early 1200s the estate passed from the Abbey into the control of laymen, and by 1326 the Earls of Kildare rented it for 70 shillings and "two pounds of wax !". The golf club was officially opened in 1995 by legendary Australian golfer and five times Open Champion, Peter Thomson. The story goes that he often stayed at Rathsallagh House, before the course was ev
