Desert Springs Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 2001

Desert Springs Golf Club: Inspired by the famous desert courses of Arizona & California, the Indiana course at Desert Springs Golf Club is the first "desert" course in Europe.

Extraordinary attention to detail has been paid at what you might at first think is a Tex-Mex theme park. Everything here has the look and feel of the south-western corner of the United States - the "desert-style" Indiana Course wouldn't look at all out of place in Arizona.

Beyond the not overly wide slivers of fairway, lies typical desert rough, containing a fine array of cactus and wild desert flowers; beware the occasional snake or scorpion! Ball-finding in these areas is not impossible, but playing out from the hardpan stony ground may damage those new irons of yours (its best to put an old 9-iron in your bag for these occasions).

This exciting layout is relatively easy walking, with pleasant but not excessive undulations and several (often dry) water hazards. Hilly, rugged, arid countryside surrounds the course as well as holiday homes and villas on some holes.

Thankfully most of the course will remain free of real estate, although at the 17th the housing was built much too close to the hole. This good short par-4 is frequently played as a modest par-3 from forward tees. For the most part this is a fun and very distinctive course, which provides an excellent test for your game.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club
