The Victoria Golf Club: Falling into the enchanted world of Victoria Golf Club will surely be one of the most memorable moments of any golfing trip to the Melbourne area. This course is one of Australia's best, and the clubhouse surely one of the country's smartest.
The golf course here is fabulous by anyone's definition. The gently undulating terrain has been adorned with trees of every variety, bunkers that are unforgettably huge (and golf-ball magnetic), springy fairways and greens that are usually lightning fast (especially when the minimal amount of grass is cut to its very roots !). The layout ensures all these ingredients are brought together into one excellent hole after another - the only thing missing (you'll be glad to here) are any water hazards.
Like other courses on the Melbourne sandbelt, a couple of roads run alongside parts of the course perimeter, but any traffic noise simply melts away as you fall under Victoria's spellbinding charms.
Victoria is a private club. Outside visitor play is restricted. Overseas and interstate visitors should contact the Pro Shop to determine playing possibilities.
Credit cards accepted.
Non-metal spike facility. Walking permitted at all times.
Good
Victoria has hosted many top national and regional tournaments including the Australian Open and Australian PGA championships (see Tournaments section - by Venue). The splendid clubhouse at Victoria provides accommodation for visiting golfers. Victoria GC is the home club of two very distinguished Australian golfers - Peter Thomson (5 times British Open champion) and Doug Bachli, winner of the British Amateur Open championship in 1954 (see Tournaments section). In 1954/55 both the Claret Jug and the Open Amateur Championship trophies adorned the mantelpiece in the Victoria GC bar.
World: formerly ranked world's 94th best course (GOLF magazine, 1997; not in subsequent editions of this ranking).
Australia: 9th best course in Australia (Australian Golf Digest, 2020).
