Golf Son Gual is home to a course frequently rated the No.1 layout on the holiday island of Mallorca. Opening for play in 2007, this Thomas Himmel design offers a wonderful variety of holes, combining the openness of a links-style layout with the stylish bunkering and not infrequent water hazards more typical of parkland courses.
This excellently maintained layout occupies gently undulating terrain above and to the east of the city of Palma. Dispersed throughout the course are 66 strategically placed bunkers and more than 1,000 olive trees. Panoramic views onto the surrounding rural countryside, vineyards and nearby Tramuntana Mountains frequently provide a pleasant distraction from your triumphs and disasters on the golf course.
Laid out in two nine-hole loops (an "outer" front-nine and "inner" back-nine), the quality, quantity and size of the sand bunkers will get your attention from the start. Water hazards put in their first telling appearance alongside the peninsula green of the par-5 4th, and thereafter at three of the par-3s.
As on many modern designs, the undulating greens are large, with plenty of challenging breaks and borrows. Well-crafted approach and run-off areas, will also thoroughly test your short game skills, especially if you want to escape with par or better. Passing passenger jets on their way out of Palma airport may also create an occasional distraction or two. The old "Palacio" of Son Gual looks out over the eastern end of the course, contrasting with electricity pylons that run, seemingly unobtrusively, across the western end.
Pick of the holes: arguably Son Gual's most memorable hole is also its longest, the hop-skip-and-jump par-5 18th where water has to be reckoned with from tee-to-green.

Son Gual is located near the small village of Sant Jordi, in what is often known as Mallorca's "Valley of a 1,000 windmills". Built around an old and now derelict "Palacio" (large country villa), the course lies just a few kilometres from Palma, the capital and largest city of Mallorca.
Palma's Old City (in the south-east area of Palma) comprises a cathedral and a fascinating maze of streets, with clear influences from the city's Arab past.
