Where2Golf says:

Bandon Dunes Golf Resort (Old Macdonald course): The fourth championship course at Bandon Dunes pays homage to golf course architect Charles Blair Macdonald, regarded as "the Father of American golf architecture". Many of the design features that Macdonald might have deployed, have been crafted into Tom Doak and Jim Urbina's design for this very natural "retro" links layout.

"Charlie" Macdonald's formative years as a golfer were spent in St Andrews in Scotland. Under the tutelage of Old Tom Morris he fashioned his swing, while also grasping the fundamentals of great golf course design. As with the famous links of the "auld grey toon", the Old Macdonald layout incorporates vast greens, myriad angles of play, and deep fierce bunkers. There's a couple of blind drives to make, and two wonderful clifftop greens at the fabulous par-4 7th and par-5 15th. You may find some of the ultra-wide fairways and huge slick green surrounds a bit too exaggerated, but holes of this ilk most certainly do exist on the coastal courses of Britain and Ireland.

On a slightly flatter and less dune-filled landscape than its siblings enjoy, Old Macdonald gets much of its definition from prolific bunkering and expansive sandy waste areas. Fescue grasses and gorse bushes do the rest. The huge seriously undulating greens, vast green surrounds and generous tee-boxes almost blend into each other, with grass lengths differentiated in microns rather than fractions of an inch. But don't think these playing areas are flat. There's as many bumps, dips, hollows and swales as you can shake a stick at.

In Old Macdonald you'll find a golf course that stands alongside the USA's best seaside courses. It's different and it's fun to play. Like the new Castle Course at St Andrews, it may not be to everyone's taste, but it's certainly a course that you need to play and then make up your own mind.

Stay & Play: on-site accommodation is available at Bandon Dunes in a variety of luxury lodges, inns and cottages (see Where2Stay section below).

Did you know?

Charles Blair Macdonald (1855-1939), the "Father of American Golf Architecture" and first U.S. Amateur Champion, was born in Ontario to naturalised American parents - a Scottish father and Canadian (part Mohawk) mother. Bandon's Old Macdonald course seeks to answer a simple question. What would "Charlie" Macdonald have created had this piece of the Oregon coast been available to him? Course architects Tom Doak and Jim Urbina were commissioned to create a layout incorporating many classic Macdonald design features. Old Macdonald is the result.

Other "coastal" courses originally designed by Macdonald include Shinnecock Hills (1901 redesign), National Golf Links of America (1908), Mid Ocean Club, Bermuda (1921) and Monterey Peninsula's Dunes course (1925). His most renowned inland designs include Chicago Golf Club (1892), the Old White course at The Greenbrier (1914) and Yale (1926).
