Where2Golf says:

Hunter Ranch Golf Course: In the heart of the Central Coast wine country, Hunter Ranch is a course that combines "small town charm, with world class golf". There is no housing around this excellent course, allowing you to enjoy the ever-present and picturesque views over hills and vineyards, both near and far. This well maintained layout follows the natural contours of the open, undulating terrain. Constant elevation changes create many fabulous golf holes that will take you either up or downhill, on a journey towards large and sometimes seriously sloping greens. Along the way many sturdy oaks flank the generally good-width fairways, supplemented by good-quality bunkering throughout. After playing the front-nine you may think water will have little part to play in your round, and your score might be looking good. But the wake-up call comes at the par-4 10th. From here to the finish, water is going to threaten much more regularly. With some of the fairways feeling tighter and occasionally less open and more tree-lined, the more challenging back-nine will make some testing demands on your straight hitting and distance control. The long par-4 12th, for example, presents one of the tightest drives, requiring a good-length carry over water from the tee, then a tight dog-leg left and more water to carry before the green. Among other outstanding holes, the par-4 4th is played to a nicely elevated green, an impressive pine tree standing sentinel beside the green.

Did you know?

The nearby city of Paso Robles, or more correctly El Paso de Robles (the Pass of the Oaks), is a community of approximately 30,000, nestled in the coastal mountain range of central California. Located close to mountains, beaches, and deserts, it is home to a legendary wine growing area, the Paso Robles region, where potent Zinfandel's feature strongly. >> The Salinan Indians, the most historical inhabitants of the area, were here thousands of years before the Spanish mission era, at which time the Paso Robles Rancho (a mere 30,000 acres) was granted to Pedro Narvaez. In 1857, the entire ranch was purchased by James and Daniel Blackburn and Lazarus Godehaux for $8,000. >> Hunter Ranch has a very attractive sister course, La Purisima, located about 1.5 hours further south in another wine-growing area, the Santa Rita hills in the Santa Ynez valley, near Lompoc (see's separate entry).
