Bighorn Golf & Country Club (formerly known as Sun Rivers Golf Course): Perched above the city of Kamloops, on the north side of the South Thompson River, Bighorn is home to an impressive 7,000-yard championship golf course. The layout meanders through an ever-expanding residential development, but also enjoys some dramatic and natural stretches alongside steep hills ("hoodoos") that rise up behind the course.
A spectacular vista awaits at the first tee of this well-crafted undulating layout. To the south, across the wide Thompson River, the entirety of Kamloops sprawls out across gently rolling hills. To the north, in the Kamloops Indian reservation, the eroded and arid slopes of the "Hoodoos" climb above you. This stunning backdrop also features at many other holes.
Graham Cooke and Wayne Carleton's excellent design is home to an abundance of round, saucer-like bunkers. Stray too far offline and sage-brush covered scrub awaits, or perhaps somebody's yard! Thankfully, several holes have retained their natural desert-like habitat, especially on the higher elevations of the back-nine. Here the dramatically eroded "hoodoos" line the holes.
With a few notably tighter exceptions, the fairways generally provide good width landing areas. The gently sloping greens are often attractively set into small natural bowls, around them the stylish bunkering is typically large and plentiful.
The hillside terrain at Bighorn is predominantly quite open, accentuating the linksy-desert feel of the course. Dramatic views certainly feature on most holes, whether onto the hills, the river or the city, or all three. Where housing is present, it generally sits out of harm's way, looking down onto those holes it flanks.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.

The Bighorn golf course and Sun Rivers residential community is built on the Tk'emlups Indian Reservation. Tk'emlups (from which Kamloops comes) translates as "the meeting of the waters", a reference to North and South Thompson rivers that join together close to the centre of Kamloops.
