Hong Kong Golf Club, Fanling (Eden course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1889

The renowned Hong Kong Golf Club at Fanling offers three well-regarded and attractive 18-hole layouts, namely the Old, New and Eden courses. These mainly tree-lined parkland layouts each deliver plenty of golfing challenge, combined with many attractive features and excellent upkeep.

Laid out as a seven-hole loop from the clubhouse, followed by a 11-hole loop, the Eden course is the shortest and many would say the tightest of the Club's offerings. Along the way you'll encounter some testing water hazards, as well as the need for accuracy over length most of the time.

There's trouble aplenty if you stray too far offline from the par-3 3rd thru' to the short par-5 6th. These four testing holes are laid out on the side of a steep hill. From the par-3 5th there's a good view into China and the sprawling metropolis of Shenzhen.

Ten holes of the Eden course join forces with eight from the New course to create a "Composite layout" for the Hong Kong Open championship. Plenty of drama has been seen over the years at the Eden's par-4 18th ("The Ultimate"), the tournament's closing hole, with water to cross directly in front of the green.

Did you know?

Queen Victoria conferred the Royal prefix on the Hong Kong Golf Club in its founding year (1889). At its 1996 Annual General Meeting, the club resolved to drop the Royal title, ahead of the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to the People's Republic of China in 1997.

The club originally played in Happy Valley, a location shared with many other activities. As the club expanded, the need for a more permanent home was addressed with the building of a small nine hole course at Deep Water Bay, before the club eventually moved to its current location in Fanling. It has been the home of the Hong Kong Open since the event's inauguration in 1959 (see our Tournaments section >by Venue >Hong Kong GC).
