Irvine Golf Club (Bogside)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1887

Irvine Golf Club (Bogside): perhaps not one of the best known or most spectacular of the golf courses on Scotland's Ayrshire coast, this open, flattish links offers an absorbing and testing layout from start to finish.

Views from the course are somewhat mixed, with a railway, residential housing, some industry and pleasant hills to the north all in the picture. Unlike the area's better known courses, there are no sea views. But, from within the course, you have the opportunity to become enjoyably immersed in James Braid's design, and the pleasure of putting on the layout's immaculate greens.

In your quest to reach those excellent greens in regulation, your biggest challenge is staying out of the fairway-lining and ball-swallowing heather and gorse. Definitely worth putting an extra ball or two in your bag, before setting out to play this long-established, well regarded and pleasurable links layout.

Did you know?

The name "Bogside", often associated with Irvine Golf Club, comes from the layout's proximity to a large area of marshland known as Bogside Flats. The natural marshland, a "Site of Special Scientific Interest" (SSSI), is bounded by the golf course to the north, and the rivers Irvine and Garnock to east and south.
