Prestwick St Nicholas Golf Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1851

Prestwick St Nicholas Golf Club is home to another of Ayrshire's classic out-and-back seaside links courses, and a course well worth trying to include in your golfing itinerary, along with the more renowned Prestwick Golf Club.

The holes here at "St Nick's" are laid out both parallel and perpendicular to the coast, so scoring well in the ever-present sea breeze (or full force wind) may require the deployment of just about every shot in your repertoire. The fairways will sometimes feel fairly tight, while from the tee, and as you approach the greens, excellent bunkering will need to be skilfully avoided. With a couple of blind drives in the mix as well, accuracy rather than length will serve you (and your scorecard) best.

The first three and last three holes are played over tightly rolling, gorse-laden dunes, with the course occupying somewhat flatter terrain in between the opening and closing stretches. Although flatter, the middle two-thirds of the course is no less interesting nor less scenic than the rest.

Wonderful views onto the Firth of Clyde, with the Isle of Arran in the distance, combine with a chance to study some of Ayr's commercial sea front activities at the turn. Like so many courses on the Ayrshire coast, the seashore provides one boundary for the layout, a small railway line the other.

Did you know?

Prestwick St Nicholas takes its name from Prestwick's patron saint. The club was formed in 1851 and, after sharing the Old Course with Prestwick Golf Club for some years, moved to the current site in 1892. Prestwick St Nicholas has hosted final qualifying for the Open Championship on several occasions when The Open has been staged at either Royal Troon or Turnberry. The club motto "Nulli Secundus" means "Second to none".
