New South Wales Golf Club

5-star: Fabulous – courses don’t get much better than this.

Est. 1928

New South Wales Golf Club: Known locally as "La Perouse", it is often asked why this superb and very scenic links layout is not rated even higher in the various listings of Australia's top courses ... perhaps even No.1. Suffice to say, this Alister MacKenzie design is a dazzling jewel amongst Australia's golfing gems and a must play course if you are visiting Sydney.

Everything you'd expect from a world-class links course is here. There's plenty of undulation, exquisite revetted bunkering, excellent well-paced greens, slippery run-off slopes around the putting surfaces, and spectacular sea views. A few of the landing areas from the tee will feel a bit tight, with small bushes lining some holes. A few blind shots will also be needed, however most of the time you can hit driver from the tee, with any hazards clearly laid out before you.

Pick of the holes: With a view of the S.S. Minmi shipwreck and the entrance to Botany Bay, the world famous par-3 6th hole is accessed across a small bridge, which connects you to a tee-box on the small rocky peninsula of Cape Banks. Your tee shot must cross a small inlet of Little Bay and fly the rocky shoreline to find the safety of the elevated and well-bunker defended green. If this hole was located in the USA, it would certainly feature in any and every listing of the world's best golf holes.

Did you know?

New South Wales has hosted many top national and regional tournaments, including the Australian PGA championship on several occasions (see our Tournaments section >by Venue >New South Wales).

New South Wales Golf Club is located in La Perouse, and surrounded by the northern headland section of Kamay Botany Bay National Park. The area takes its name from Comte Jean Francois de Galaup Laperouse. As you'll find out in the nearby La Perouse Museum, this French nobleman was sent by Louis XVI of France to check what the British were up to in Botany Bay. He and his two ships were last sighted at this point.
