St Andrews Beach Golf (Gunnamatta course)

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 2005

St Andrews Beach Golf (Gunnamatta course): a relatively recent addition to golfing on Mornington Peninsula, the Gunnamatta course at St Andrews Beach is as good an open links course as they come.

Utilising the attractive, expansive and naturally rolling landscape, Tom Doak has constructed a course that will push you to the edge of your comfort zone. Hitting the good-width fairways should not be too troublesome (wind permitting), but it's the approach work that will test your nerve.

On several occasions hitting the greens demands either a blind or semi-blind shot; some are accessed through narrow entrances, others heavily defended by rustic and deep bunkering, or small trees, or severe run-offs, and occasionally all of these!

The choice you are often presented with is either to play safe and lay-up, then hope to chip on and sink the putt, or alternatively "go for the green" with all the attendant dangers that involves.

There are splendid rural views of the open Mornington Peninsula countryside from all parts of the course; however, the sea cannot be seen so will not distract your concentration on the golfing task at hand. One of the most demanding links courses in the area, but ultimately one of the most satisfying to play.
