Woodlands Golf Club

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1913

Woodlands Golf Club is home to yet another of Melbourne's excellent "sand belt" courses. With many tall trees lining the flattish fairways, getting into the right position off the tee is important, lest you be blocked out by overhanging branches and foliage on your second shot.

Launching your assault on the relatively small and often elevated greens should be undertaken carefully; they are usually protected by a posse of deepish bunkers on one side, and steep run-offs on the other.

Some traffic noise from neighbouring roads is unavoidable on the early holes of the front nine, but once you've got into your stride the wonderful layout and golfing challenges of Woodlands will command your full attention.

The back-nine feels a little stronger than the front; the environment exudes a more natural feel, with the quality and challenges of the layout building through the closing stretch. Two testing par-5s are included in the last four holes.

Did you know?

A schoolteacher and passionate golfer, Mr. G.H. Rogers co-founded Woodlands Golf Club and suggested the site for the course in 1912. A year later the club was established and play commenced.

The open woodland on which the course was constructed had been used for grazing and was part of the estate of Count Fonceca, a French nobleman, known as the "Mad Count" for his eccentric behaviour.
