Where2Golf says:

La Estancia Golf Resort: P.B. Dye's exciting design at La Estancia is the most recent addition to the golfing scene in Dominican's La Romana area. Laid out on generally open and undulating terrain, the course is perched above the immensely scenic Chavon River. Spectacular views down into the tree-lined river valley can be enjoyed from many vantage points on the course. Good-width fairways lead you to well bunkered and often seriously mounded green complexes, where the putting surfaces have been crafted with a mesmerising array of slopes and borrows. The approach to several greens require nerve-jangling shots over or alongside stretches of the canyon-like river valley, where anything too wayward will disappear into terrain that tumbles several hundred feet down towards the river. On occasions the holes are (or will be) flanked by the resort's villas, cottages and condos, which are typically set far enough back to be safe from errant drives. Like the nearby Dye Fore layout at Casa de Campo (designed by P.B.'s father, Pete) La Estancia is another dramatic design, with the Chavon River valley frequently providing a spectacular backdrop to this wonderfully challenging golf layout.

Did you know?

Nearby La Romana is Dominican's third-largest city. The city gets its name from a balance (romana) that was used to weigh merchandise for export. In terms of size, La Romana took a huge leap forward in 1917, when the South Puerto Rico Sugar Company built their mammoth Central Romana mill in the city. In the 1960's the company became part of the conglomerate Gulf+Western, who later sold their stake in the Central Romana Corporation to a group of local and foreign investors. Gulf+Western acquired Consolidated Cigar in 1968 and shifted the Canary Island cigar-making operation to La Romana, and a factory that is now one of the largest cigar factories in the world, making brands such as Montecristo, H. Upmann, and Romeo y Julieta.
