Portal Hotel, Golf & Spa (Premier course)

4-star: generally an excellent standard golf course, well worth visiting.
Portal Hotel, Golf & Spa (Premier course) Est. 1990

Where2Golf says:

Portal Hotel, Golf & Spa (Premier course): This relatively open and recent parkland layout is justly famous for its magnificent views over surrounding Cheshire, and also away to Staffordshire, Derbyshire and the distant hill line of Cannock Chase. On the course, very good use is made of the undulating terrain (and Roman excavations - see Did You Know ?). The driving line is often quite tight, with thick rough awaiting stray shots. The closing stretch of four holes, two par-3's and two par-5's provides a fitting end to a very pleasant course. Is this better than the more society-oriented Championship course ? You decide, we liked them both.

Did you know?

This is a great course to play with one of the more knowledgeable members. They will point out the many examples of ancient Roman activity strewn around this course, activity that pre-dates the golf by perhaps 1500 years. There are walls (e.g. at the 7th green) and ponds (in the middle of the 10th fairway) which are remnants of the Roman stone-quarrying that supplied the basic materials from which the ancient city of Chester was first built. Masons' marks are still inscribed in some of the stones. Alongside the 8th hole (left-side) is an old Roman road.

Koksijde Golf ter Hille Golf Club: on what was previously open farmland, an enjoyable and challenging links-style layout has been crafted. Perhaps the inspiration for Koksijde's new course came from a renowned Harry Colt layout that existed in the 1920s just a couple of kilometres to the west. Read more...
