Portal Golf Club (Championship course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1990

Portal Golf Club (Championship course): Two absorbing 18-hole courses, a nine-holer, and onsite accommodation are on offer here at Portal. The Championship course, located alongside the hotel, is longer than the Premier course, which is located just under a mile away. Both courses boast fabulous views over the surrounding Cheshire countryside; Beeston Castle, Jodrell Bank as well as a host of other counties are all in view. The views though are where the likeness between Portal's two offerings stop.

The Championship course invites big-hitters to keep the big-timber in use on most tee shots. Forget the deadly rough of the sister course, here the rough is far less onerous, no doubt helping society golfers enjoy their day out. Many people take buggies here, but apart from the length of the course and one or two green-to-tee walks, its really not too onerous.

There are some lovely water features, excellent greens, beautiful early summer rhododendrons, and many great holes. The yardage guide is well worth getting; it contains fascinating historical notes about earlier activities here - well before the golf came along.

Good

Did you know?

Some great Did You Know facts are presented in Portal's yardage guide - it's worth buying one. Our favourite is about the fragment of a ruined abbey next to the first hole and behind the 18th. The ruins are not as old as they might appear. They were put there by Lieutenant-Colonel Richard Egerton (a veteran of Waterloo and other 19th century campaigns). He also included in this feature a cross commemorating Agincourt, inscribed with the name of St Crispin, on whose special day Agincourt was fought.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.

Jim Fazio's original layout was much changed to create a modern Ryder Cup course ... now one of the Eternal City's (and Italy's) most revered.

Prince's Golf Club, Kent (UK)

Here at Prince’s Golf Club you'll find 27 excellent holes of links golf. Just over the fence and sharing similar terrain is Royal St George’s; but Prince’s is far from overshadowed by its venerable neighbour.
