Sandy Lodge Golf Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1910

Sandy Lodge Golf Club: "A sandy golf links in the North of London that could be played all year round". That was the vision of Mr. J. Francis Markes in the summer of 1908, and that's what Sandy Lodge provides in excellent fashion to this day.

Although surrounded by woodland, the course initially takes its cue from some of the best characteristics to be found on Britain's seaside links courses. The open undulating terrain is home to rolling fairways, which are defined by small dunes and lined by deep grassy rough and gorse bushes.

At the par-4 2nd, a huge, railway-sleepered, St Andrews-like bunker puts in an appearance; elsewhere an array of pot bunkers and larger sandtraps are threateningly deployed. Later in the round, one or two holes become a little more tree-lined, although not to detract from the overall open, linksy feel of this enjoyable layout.

The par of 70 (back tees) includes six par-3s, so don't be surprised to find the most challenging and dramatic of them awaiting you at the closing 18th hole. With a preponderance of tree-lined parkland golf courses in and around the busy metropolis of London, Sandy Lodge is a little gem that stands out from the crowd, posing more of a links-style golfing challenge to its members and many admiring visitors.

Did you know?

Among its former golf professionals, Sandy Lodge can boast Eric Brown and John "Golf Doctor" Jacobs - both Ryder Cup Captains in their day.

The latin Club motto "In Arena Virtus" translates into "Courage in Combat", or as a classics master at nearby Harrow School suggested, "Our virtue lies in our sand".

The underlying sandy soil, from which the club (and previous farm) get their names, is the residue of an ancient coastal beach or coastal river. Very different soil than the more common London clay, on which most of the UK's capital city sits.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club
