Aa Saint-Omer Golf Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1990

Aa Saint-Omer Golf Club: Straddling two sides of a small, natural valley, Aa Saint Omer's championship course (Le Val/The Valley) presents a relatively open and undulating lay-out, which hosted its first European Tour event in 2003.

From the clubhouse and more elevated positions on the course there are splendid views over the surrounding partly-forested, rural countryside. Whereas several front-nine holes follow the valley floor, the back-nine has a more roller-coaster character, as you cross from one side to the other, sometimes hitting down into the valley, at other times up and out of it.

Few back-nine holes traverse the sides of the valley. Straight driving will need to be complemented by accurate approach work to hit the large, undulating greens. These testing putting surfaces, well defended with good bunkering and occasionally water, are often elevated, while a few are to be found in plunging hollows.

Although the layout is open for the most part, the course perimeter is predominantly woodland, with copses of trees providing a tree-lined feel to some holes. Overall a thoroughly enjoyable venue, as many visiting British, Dutch and Belgian golfers will amply testify (photos courtesy of Aa Saint-Omer Golf Club).

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
