Arcangues
Golf D'Arcangues: There's plenty of variety in terms of golfing terrain and surroundings here, but thankfully Fream's excellent layout holds them all together in a nicely balanced and very pleasant golf course. Where the front-nine is predominantly wooded, the back-nine loop is considerably more open, apart from three holes that circumnavigate a rambling old chateau.
There's plenty of elevation changes on the course, with many holes taking you up or downhill. A few make use of some flatter terrain. The generally good-width fairways lead to well-defended greens, which are great to putt on.
From the course the views are simply stunning. In the distance you'll see the mighty Pyrenees; in the foreground the wonderfully rolling and heavily wooded Basque countryside. If you have a camera ensure the batteries are still charged for the 17th tee, where you'll enjoy the best of all the views.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends. Closed Mondays (Nov-March).
Must book in advance. Maximum handicap (July & Aug): 35.
Players generally walk this course. Golf carts available for hire.

Walker Cup: the 50th playing of this prestigious men’s amateur event sees the GB&I go head-to-head against the defending USA team at Cypress Point Club, California (Sept 6-7). After that, all eyes turn to Bethpage State Park on Long Island, NY, where the American and defending European professional teams engage in the 45th Ryder Cup (Sept 27-29).
Lottie Woad: 21-year-old Woad burst onto the professional scene in July, with wins in the Women’s Irish Open (as an amateur) and three weeks later in the Women’s Scottish Open (as a professional). She nearly picked-up a major championship, placing third in The Evian in the same month.
