Where2Golf says:

The Old Course at Golf de Cannes Mandelieu (originally Cannes Golf Club) is understandably steeped in history. It was founded by a future Russian Emperor (albeit Emperor for a day), laid out by one of the world's greatest course designers, and sports a wonderful Norman-style clubhouse. Like many of the older seaside courses, a small railway runs alongside, or in this case through the course, while the River Siagne also splices the layout in two. You will cross the river twice, courtesy of a small pontoon-ferry.

Occupying flat terrain and carved from a forest of Mediterranean umbrella pines, the fairways in this attractive and natural parkland setting are well-spaced and invariably tree-lined. Housing is conspicuous by its absence, but so to is the sea, which is very occasionally glimpsed through the trees.

Although not overly long at only 5,745 metres (6,300 yards), the tightish fairways, excellent fairway and greenside bunkering and Colt's trademark subtly sloping greens will sufficiently test your all-round golfing skills. Holes like the good-length par-4 7th demonstrate that even on flat terrain, a well-bunkered, tree-lined hole can look just as handsome as those that benefit from greater undulation.

This classic and venerable old course is usually maintained in excellent condition, underpinning its status as a golfing gem, and one that's well worth visiting whenever you are French Riviera bound.

Did you know?

Cannes Golf Club (the 4th oldest in France), now known as the Old Course Cannes Mandelieu, was founded in 1891 by His Imperial Highness The Grand Duke Michael Aleksandrovich of Russia. A keen golfer, he returned from a golfing trip to St Andrews (aged 12 !), and advanced the idea of creating the Cote D'Azur's first official golf club. Michael was the younger brother of Tsar Nicholas II, who abdicated in favour of Michael in 1917. Michael never exercised power as Emperor Michael II, deferring acceptance of the throne until the future of Russia's monarchy could be democratically decided. In 1918, on the orders of Lenin, he was executed together with his English valet.

Cannes-Mandelieu is the home club of French golf star and Ryder Cup player Victor Dubuisson.
