Golf International de Pont Royal

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1992

Golf International de Pont Royal lays down a Seve Ballesteros crafted golf adventure, one best undertaken with the aid of a golf cart, unless you are in the mood for some reasonably strenuous exercise. This is not a golf course for the faint-hearted, with some twisting par-4s, superb par-3s over water and an unforgettable par-3 11th over a ravine.

Make no mistake, this is a very good and scenic test of golf course, but one that can take a round or two to discover where best to hit the ball, and where to definitely avoid. On occasions you will be faced with some tightish drives and approach shots.

The layout is typically quite undulating, although there is a flatter stretch of holes, starting at the tricky water defended par-3 2nd (next to the Moulins de Vernegues Hotel). This flatter stretch follows alongside the D7N main road. After another testing and watery par-3 at the 5th, you turn away from the road and journey uphill at the par-4 6th, taking on one of several tightish drives as you play this well-bunkered hole.

Pont Royal incorporates a combination of many great holes, and many tough ones. The housing that flanks parts of the course perimeter, thankfully doesn't impinge too seriously on the layout. From the higher elevations of the course there are wonderful views over valleys and mountains beyond, all quite spectacular.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.

Jim Fazio's original layout was much changed to create a modern Ryder Cup course ... now one of the Eternal City's (and Italy's) most revered.
