Makila
Makila Golf Club: With the folding hills of the French Basque country all around and the more distant Pyrenees mountains in the background, you can be sure of wonderful views from the Makila course. The hilly terrain also creates some relatively stiff and long climbs between the holes. The layout, designed by American Rocky Roquemore, is a good one with many stylish looking holes.
Initially you could well find Makila a challenging and technical layout. The surrounding woodland (predominantly oak) and many "in-range" Basque-style holiday houses demand straight-hitting from the tee on several holes. There is space to be found on the fairways, although much of it only apparent after you've played the course a few times.
The front-nine contains some of the layout's best holes, with the most scenic views coming on the back-nine. Seven holes on the back-nine loop are played on the other side of a busy local road, although any traffic noise is not too bothersome on the course. The greens here are excellent and bunkering more than adequate, though general maintenance standards can fluctuate.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance.
Players generally walk this course. Golf carts available for hire.
