Where2Golf says:

Originally part of the Atlanta Athletic Club (which is now located 23 miles to the north in Johns Creek), the East Lake Golf Club is the home course of legendary golfer Robert Tyre "Bobby" Jones. It is also the oldest golf course in the city of Atlanta, situated only five miles east of the downtown area. Laid out on either side of the good-sized East Lake, Donald Ross's original design was restored to its former glory in 1994 by famed architect Rees Jones. The present course now measures 7,374 yards from the championship tees and plays to a testing par of 72. East Lake’s signature hole is the 168-yard, par-3 6th, which plays from an elevated tee to a diagonally angled peninsula green - one of the first island greens in America. East Lake is widely regarded as one of the USA's finest golf courses, an excellent quality tree-lined and open parkland layout. Although a private course, generally playable only by its members and their invited guests, the revitalisation of the club in the 1990s became an integral part in the revitalisation of the local neighbourhood. All profits from the club, as well as charitable donations from the club’s corporate membership, support the East Lake Foundation and are channelled back into projects to support and improve the local community.

About the course

The course: 18 holes. Tree-lined & open parkland.
Gently undulating terrain - no effort to walk.

Surroundings: Woodland and residential.

Designer: The original (No.1) course was designed by Tom Bendelow (1908) and significantly redesigned and re-routed by Donald Ross (1913). In 1994, Rees Jones restored Ross’s original layout, which had fallen into almost terminal decline during the 1970s and 80s. In 1928 Donald Ross also designed East Lake's No.2 course, which opened in 1930. The No.2 course ceased to exist and was buried under a public housing project in 1970.

Did you know?

Originally part of Atlanta Athletic Club, the East Lake Country Club was established in the early 1900s to accommodate the club's increasing number of golfers. East Lake Golf Club, as it is now known, remained part of Atlanta Athletic until 1968, when its "parent" moved to a new location at Johns Creek. | East Lake is renowned as the club where the great Bobby Jones developed and honed his golfing skills. In 1908, aged six, Bobby Jones attended East Lake's official opening in the company of his father "Colonel" Robert P. Jones. The elder Jones, served as president of the club from 1937-42; son Bobby was the club president from 1946-47. | East Lake has hosted many top-level golf tournaments including the 1950 US Women's Amateur, 1963 Ryder Cup and 2001 US Men's Amateur. It is now the permanent home of The TOUR Championship, the culminating event of the PGA TOUR playoffs for the FedEx Cup (see our Tournaments section >by Venue >East Lake).

Royal Ostend Golf Club: represents Belgium’s only real "beside-the-seaside" links golf course (others like Royal Zoute are located a little way inland). Here at Ostend many holes make excellent use of an impressive area of sand dunes.
