Where2Golf says:

Sea Island Resort (Plantation course): The Sea Island Resort on St Simons Island is home to three top-quality championship golf courses. The highly-regarded Seaside course was created in 1999 when Tom Fazio oversaw the combining of the resort's nine-hole Seaside and Marshside layouts. A year earlier Rees Jones had combined the former Plantation and Retreat nines, to form the modern-day Plantation course. The Retreat course is the newest of the Sea Island layouts; originally designed by Joe Lee and subsequently reworked in 2001 by Davis Love III and his brother Mark.

Sea Island's Plantation course is a championship layout that ranks with some of the best in Georgia. This tree-lined and open parkland course provides a wonderful test for your all-round game, with many attractive, skilfully crafted and challenging holes to enjoy. The layout unfolds among avenues of ancient live oak and cedar, with a hint of danger lurking in its tidal creeks and lakes. Rees Jones called the renovated Plantation a "parkland by the sea" for its magnificent vistas of the Atlantic Ocean and its lush natural scenery. A must play if you are in the area.

Stay & Play: a variety of luxury on-site accommodation is available at the Sea Island resort (see Where2Stay section below).

About the course

The course: 18 holes. Tree-lined & open parkland.

Surroundings: Woodland (including tidal creeks and lakes) and residential.

Designer: The Plantation course was established in 1998 as the result of Rees Jones combining and updating two of Sea Island's four nine-hole layouts (Plantation and Retreat). The Plantation-nine had originally been designed by Walter Travis (1926); the Retreat-nine was designed by Dick Wilson (1960). In 1999 Tom Fazio combined the other two Sea Island nine-hole layouts (Seaside and Marshside) into the resort's current Seaside course.

Did you know?

In 1926 Sea Island founder Howard Coffin purchased Retreat Plantation, a former cotton plantation on St. Simons Island. The plantation had been owned and managed before the Civil War by Anna Matilda Page King (1798-1859), the wife of the frequently absent Thomas Butler King. After the war, the land was made available by descendants of the King family. Coffin knew that playing golf would be important for his future resort guests’ enjoyment.
