[Original Where2Golf description]: Designed by Ian Baker-Finch, the Woodlands course at Bintan Lagoon Resort is an excellently crafted through-the-jungle golf course. Its companion, the slightly easier-going Jack Nicklaus-designed Sea View course, might command the ocean vistas and an ocean-side hole, but IBF must also be applauded for his challenging and inspired layout.
Splendidly laid out in pristine rain forest, this out-and-back layout is certainly not a push-over resort course. With jungle on either side of most holes and many significant elevation changes, this is a layout that will thoroughly test your game from tee-to-green. Straight hitting is essential on several tightish tee shots, with some blind, uphill approach shots also to be made, as at the slender par-4 10th. Deep bunkering around the often elevated greens and threatening water hazards on five or six holes will also need to be factored into your course management.
Within this undulating jungle environment there are many testing holes to negotiate, and many monkeys to observe your progress (and steal any food and valuables on view in your buggy). The back-to-back par-4s at 8 and 9, played at the far end of the layout, occupy one of the most attractive corners of the course. The par-3 14th played over water is another gem, and so too the par-3 5th.
With no traffic noise or housing development around the course, this is a blissfully natural environment in which to soak up the sights and sounds of the jungle, and carefully negotiate your way round this attractive and always challenging design.
