Laguna Golf Bintan

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1997

Laguna Golf Bintan was formerly part of Banyan Tree Bintan, still the name of the neighbouring all-villa luxury resort. The Greg Norman layout here, revamped by Laguna Golf in 2016, comprises two nine-hole loops. Several of the front-nine holes are arranged around a good-size lagoon, with the more undulating back-nine taking you on a jungle adventure. Both nines get you down to the palm-fringed shoreline of the South China Sea.

The layout's flatter front-nine, takes you quickly seaward to a beautiful palm-fringed beach, where the short par-3 3rd hole is played directly alongside the seashore. The par-4 4th connects you from the beach back to an inland lagoon, around which the next four holes are played, culminating in the uphill par-4 9th back to the clubhouse.

With more elevation change than on the front-nine, holes 10 to 15 play through dense jungle and amongst unique rock formations. The long par-4 16th brings you once again to the sea's edge, this time on the other side of the Banyan Tree headland.

The highlight of the course comes at the signature par-3 17th, played from a tee perched over the sea, across the rocky foreshore and onto a green defended not by bunkers, but by the South China Sea itself. The impact of this visually intimidating hole is only slightly eased by its beautiful seaside setting ... with Malaysia in the far distance and the Banyan Tree villas perched on a jungle-clad hill across the small bay.

Did you know?

Laguna Bintan is not to be confused with Bintan Lagoon, which is an entirely separate resort and golf facility further along the coast. It is however related through ownership to the Laguna Phuket golf course in Thailand.

This area of northern Bintan, called the Bintan Beach International Resort (also known as "Singonesia") is home to four excellent golf courses and several resort hotels. It provides a holiday location and a popular weekend retreat from the hustle and bustle of Singapore. You can use Singapore Dollars here, as well as Indonesian rupiah.
