Ria Bintan Golf Club (Ocean course): Mention the island of Bintan to a Singaporean golfer, and they will strongly urge you to play Ria Bintan. If you want a memorable outing on a top-quality and immensely scenic course, take their advice ... you won't be disappointed.
You may like to warm-up on the nine-hole Forest course, before journeying out onto the wonderful 18-hole Ocean course. Enhancing its many stylish qualities, the bunkering on this out-and-back layout is distinctive, most bunkers having a high-grassy lip accentuating the side of the trap.
After a nerve-testing opening four holes where water is ever-present, the superb par-4 5th and 6th holes take you through wonderfully natural jungle, and seaward! On the award-winning par-5 7th, you tee-off in the jungle and arrive at a green, beautifully framed by a small pond that blends "infinity-style" with the South China Sea beyond.
The next two holes are spectacular. The par-4 8th plays to a green which appears to sit out in the ocean, while the tough par-3 9th is played across an inlet to another stunningly framed green, this time perched above the South China Sea on a rocky platform; a jungle-clad hill climbs away to the right.
The par-4 10th continues the beachside theme, while the similar length par-4 11th heralds a return inland, as you rub shoulders with a hole on neighbouring Bintan Lagoon.
The jungle-lined back-nine doesn't quite live-up to the dramatic splendour and intensity of the front, although the closing stretch of beautifully crafted and testing holes builds to a fine finish. The long par-4 18th, with a deep watery ravine protecting the front left of the green, signs of this fabulous Gary Player layout.
