Golf Club Bergamo L'Albenza

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1961

Golf Club Bergamo L'Albenza is home to one of Italy's greatest professional golfers, Costantino Rocca, as well as a delightfully challenging 27-hole golf course. Steep-sided hills with houses and villages delicately perched, and fast running streams, characterise this pre-Alpine setting just outside Bergamo. Plenty of those steep-sided banks and small streams are also be found on the course itself.

With often tightish tree-lined fairways and plenty of undulation, especially on the Blue and Red nines, you'll need your A-game to score well here. Elevation changes are plentiful, although not too arduous to walk. The layout places a premium on good course management and straight hitting, especially on the handful of occasions when the small streams threaten.

Although competitions are usually played on the Blue-Yellow combination, the quality and layout of the newer Red-nine is up to the standard of the other two nines ... and the Red has the most picturesque views. With all three nines featuring strong and testing layouts, it doesn't matter to much which combination you play. If possible, try to fit in all 27.

Did you know?

"L'Albenza" is a name taken from this particular area to the north west of Bergamo. The course hosted the Italian Open championship in 1996, won by Jim Payne of England.

Most famously in golf terms, Bergamo-L'Albenza was home to a certain caddie, who became a European Tour professional, and in 1995 very nearly won The Open Championship at St Andrews. Costantino Rocca narrowly missed out at The Open, losing in a 4-hole play-off to John Daly of the USA.
