The Golf Guide to the Top Courses
Where2Golf says:

The Mines Resort & Golf Club is home to one of Malaysia's top-rated golf courses, which enjoys a small and exclusive membership ... and a rather exuberant presence on the world golfing stage. Opportunities for outside visitors are limited to resort guests of the opulent Palace of the Golden Horses hotel. If you do tee it up here, you can marvel at how one of the world's largest tin mines was transformed into a spectacular and world class golf course.

The front-nine loop is laid out on undulating terrain. Originally pristine jungle, some upmarket real estate now flanks a few holes, but never too closely. On the relatively "dry" front-nine, small ponds are deployed at the opposite facing par-4 4th and 5th holes, complementing the impressive bunkering ... which can be especially deep and protective around the excellent greens.

Natural elevation changes are used to create some of the most memorable holes. Two such gems, are the risk-reward, short downhill par-4 6th (with a deep swale awaiting anything hit left), and the plunging par-4 9th with its knee-trembling tee-shot and panoramic backdrop. Perhaps the show-stealer on the front-nine is the par-3 2nd, played across a jungle-filled ravine, towards a wonderfully imposing tree, its roots more above ground than below.

The jungle-like setting of the front-nine gives way to the acclaimed lakeside back-nine. Here many challenging holes are played alongside the large Mines Resort lake (formerly the heart of the huge tin mine). An array of large buildings flank the opposite side of the lake. Most impressive of these is the Palace of the Golden Horses, which you can closely inspect at the par-4 12th. Whether jungle-side or lakeside, RTJ Jr's layout never ceases to challenge and enthral, with the quality of presentation always impressive.

Did you know?

Formerly the site of the world's largest open cast tin mine, the Hong Fatt mine ceased operations in 1982 and was acquired in 1988 by one of Malaysia's top business entrepreneurs, Tan Sri Lee Kim Yew. He set about transforming the derelict site into the stunning Mines Resort, and with the help of golf course architect Robert Trent Jones II, created a top-quality resort location just south of Kuala Lumpur.

The resort's exclusive and prestigious golf course has hosted a number of significant top level tournaments including the World Cup of Golf, and Asian and US PGA Tour events (see our Tournaments section >by Venue >Mines Resort).
