Horizon Hills
Horizon Hills Golf & Country Club: this relative newcomer to the golfing scene in Johor is part of a master-planned golf and real estate development. Here you'll find an excellently crafted, but very watery Ross Watson layout.
If you're happy with the preponderance of water hazards, there's plenty to admire in this flowing and well-maintained layout. But there's not too much to look at beyond the course boundary except residential housing, lightly screened by a pleasant variety of indigenous trees.
Described as a "breathtaking and challenging piece of art within a 1,200-acre freehold township development" there's no denying the layout has been excellently crafted. The holes make a clockwise loop around a housing sub-division on the front-nine, and head out-and-back in pairs on the back-nine.
All the while water is a constant threat, usually running the full length on one side of the holes, or sometimes cutting across the fairways in the form of good-width ditches. It almost goes without saying, all the par-3s are played alongside water, except the short par-3 16th ... that's the one with an island-green!
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends. Closed on Mondays.

The Horizon Hills clubhouse, designed as a township facility, is a US$17 million architectural creation by Argentinean Ernesto Bedmar. It contains a host of 5-star amenities and facilities for visiting golfers and local residents, including an Olympic-sized swimming pool, fully-equipped gym, tennis courts, pro shop, a grand ballroom and a variety of food and beverage outlets. Developers Gamuda Land also own the renowned Kota Permai G&CC near KL.
Officially opened in 2008, Horizon Hills hosted the Asian Tour's 2010, '11 and '12 Johor Opens, won respectively by three different nationality Europeans: Padraig Harrington, Joost Luiten and Sergio Garcia (see our Tournaments section >by Venue >Horizon Hills).

Women’s (British) Open: the last women’s major championship of the season is hosted by Royal Porthcawl GC. It’s the first time this fabulous seaside links course has hosted the event (July 31-Aug 3).
Walker Cup: the 50th playing of this prestigious men’s amateur event sees the GB&I go head-to-head against the defending USA team at Cypress Point Club, California (Sept 6-7). After that, all eyes turn to Bethpage State Park on Long Island, NY, where the American and defending European professional teams engage in the 45th Ryder Cup (Sept 27-29).
Lottie Woad: 21-year-old Woad burst onto the professional scene in July, with wins in the Women’s Irish Open (as an amateur) and three weeks later in the Women’s Scottish Open (as a professional). She nearly picked-up a major championship, placing third in The Evian in the same month.
Pádraig Harrington: the ever-likeable Irishman added the (British) Senior Open Championship title to his stellar array of tournament successes. His win came on Sunningdale’s spectacular Old Course. Harrington had already bagged the U.S. Senior Open title in June this year.
