Shan-Shui Golf & Country Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1998

Shan-Shui Golf & Country Club: This excellently crafted Nelson & Haworth design has bagged its fair share of Malaysian and Asian awards. Previous host to an Asian Tour event, the course roams through a large and undulating area of native jungle and former rubber tree plantation.

Plenty of elevation change, rolling tumbling fairways and large tongued bunkers characterise this stylish and challenging layout, with most holes played against a lush backdrop of jungle-clad hills. Beyond the generally good-width fairways, the jungle's thick vegetation makes an uncompromising landing area for stray shots.

As you try to unravel the mysteries of the testing greens, you might enjoy spotting numerous exotic birds, squirrels and monkeys. There's even said to be a resident crocodile in one of the water hazards.

MOST MEMORABLE HOLE: the short par-4 15th (Creek) is played from a tee that sits alongside the Crocodile River, with a creek to be crossed en route to the palm-fringed green. Like several other holes, a clear strategy and accurate shot-making will serve you better than wayward big-hitting.

Did you know?

Shan-Shui G&CC is located close to the East Malaysian town of Tawau. The town is the third-largest in Sabah, after Kota Kinabalu City and Sandakan. Tawau lies on the eastern coast of the island of Borneo, facing onto the Celebes Sea. Almost all the other top golf courses in East Malaysia are found on Borneo's north coast, facing onto the South China Sea.

The Celebes Sea is home to 580 of the world's 790 species of reef-building corals, which allows an impressive array of marine life to flourish. Whales, sharks and dolphins, turtles, manta and eagle rays, tuna, barracuda and marlin are all found in abundance. The sea is popular for scuba-diving, fishing and luxury ocean cruising.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.

Jim Fazio's original layout was much changed to create a modern Ryder Cup course ... now one of the Eternal City's (and Italy's) most revered.
