Staffield Country Resort

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1994

Staffield Country Resort: Located in the state of Negeri Sembilan, only 45 minutes drive from KL, this former rubber plantation is now home to 27-holes of excellently designed and well maintained championship golf. Staffield is based on a gently undulating and attractive layout, with good-width fairways, top-quality bunkering and among the best greens you'll find in Malaysia.

The Southern-nine is the best, especially if you like pleasantly contoured and tree-lined holes; it closely resembles a classic English parkland layout (although many palms and other exotic trees reminds you of Staffield's more equatorial location). The Southern's par-5 opening hole, played from an elevated tee to a gently dog-legging, well-bunkered fairway, signals the quality of the holes to come. The best of a testing collection of par-3's is perhaps the 8th hole (Southern), with water in play from tee to green.

The Northern-nine follows an out-and-back links-style design, in considerably more open terrain than the Southern. The Western course has more in common with the linksy openness of the Northern, and also has water coming dangerously into play on several occasions. Water appears less frequently on the Southern nine.

Irrespective of which nine you play, the greens and green surrounds are usually excellent, while the bunkering is a stylish combination of pot bunkers and others more expansive in nature. Potentially steep run-offs await if your approach play is wayward, assuming you miss the bunkers.

A scattering of villas are starting to appear on the Northern and Western courses, but not to detract from this hugely enjoyable and very strong Marsh-Watson design.
