Starhill Golf & Country Club (Bintang course)

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1993

Starhill Golf & Country Club (Bintang course): Starhill's two championship courses, the Bintang (meaning "star") and the Bukit (meaning "hill"), provide visitors with 36 holes of challenging and enjoyable golf. Sometimes very testing, other times easier-going, the Bintang tends to be used for the bigger events here. This pleasant parkland layout, which is not too heavily tree-lined, contains several elevation changes, although nothing too steep or excessive. The generally good-width and contoured fairways have a habit of narrowing down from time-to-time, although your main challenge will be staying out of the proliferation of bunkering around the large greens and avoiding the relatively frequent ponds and small lakes. The back-nine contains the tougher holes, with several tightish drives to be made. The par-5 11th is dangerously skirted by water on the rightside as it gently doglegs from left to right, while the closing stretch of three holes could seriously add to your score. The signature par-3 16th is literally the star of the show, with a star-shaped green to play to - a mere 194 yards from the tips. A sharp dogleg at the 17th may have you contemplating a dangerous cut across the corner over the trees, while at the long par-5 18th (rarely reached in two), a fade to a tightish fairway is needed from the tee. In the past, thick jungle surrounded the course, but bulldozers have swept large swathes of it away, most noticeably as you play the 17th hole; housing rather than pristine jungle is now in view. For the most part, the Bintang epitomises a pleasantly undulating, lightly tree-lined, parkland layout.
