Where2Golf says:

Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club is home to a layout that can be counted as one of the most natural and picturesque in Pinehurst's glittering array of sandhills golf courses. Masterfully designed by Donald Ross, and always immaculately presented, the Mid Pines course was created in an era when finesse, style and charm were the priorities. Over-powering a golf course with 350-yard drives was just not part of the golfing lexicon.

At just over 6,500 yards from the tips, the layout here is not overly long by modern standards. However, the undulating terrain, relative tightness of the fairways, superb greenside bunkering and subtly sloping greens will ensure your game is thoroughly examined in this delightfully wooded setting. Apart from a few attractive and well-spaced houses that border the 10th fairway, nothing intrudes on the naturalness of this beautiful course.

Tall, majestic pines and occasional oaks give the holes their definition, while blossoming dogwoods and magnolias add extra splashes of colour in the spring. A carpet of pine needles beneath the trees makes ball-finding relatively easy, although accuracy from the tee will serve you better here than wayward power-hitting. This sandhills gem, comes to a fitting finale with the green of the uphill par-4 18th wonderfully framed by the impressive Mid Pines Inn.

Stay & Play: luxury on-site accommodation is available in the Mid Pines Inn and nearby Pine Needles Lodge (o.5 mi) (see Where2Stay section below).

Did you know?

In the 1910's, the Tufts family (founders of the Pinehurst village, resort and hotel) wanted to meet the rapidly increasing demand for golf in the Pinehurst area. They turned their attention to the Knollwood area, between Pinehurst and Southern Pines, and commissioned Donald Ross to build a new golf course. In 1921 Knollwood (later renamed as Mid Pines) was opened and exists today much as it did then.

After the Second World War, Frank and Maisie Cosgrove acquired, restored and continued the development of Mid Pines. One of their three daughters would marry Julius Boros, who became Head Professional at Mid Pines; he also went on to collect two US Open titles and a US PGA Championship.

Mid Pines is now owned by the Bell family, who also own Pine Needles, and they have been instrumental in refurbishing the golf course and the Mid Pines Inn, returning both to their former status as "jewels of the Sandhills".
