Amendoeira Golf Resort (O'Connor Jnr course): Located in the Amendoeira Golf Resort near Silves, this Christy O'Connor Jnr design complements the resort's Faldo course. Both take full advantage of their location in a broad fertile valley, the O'Connor course laying down a less dramatic, flatter and easier-going test ... providing you can stay out of its many water hazards.
Small lakes, ponds and other assorted watercourses are spread throughout the O'Connor design, providing many birdlife sanctuaries. All this water also demands accurate shot-making from any golfers chasing a birdie or two of their own.
In combination with the water features, the skilfully landscaped terrain, planted with mature palm–trees and home to many crater-like bunkers, gives a lush "ornamental" character to several holes. Orange groves also attractively line the leftside of the front-nine holes on this out-and-back design.
The water-protected fairways and greens of the par-4 7th, 8th and 9th provides the O'Connor layout with its testing "Amen Corner". Each one of these par-4s creates a watery challenge, with all three running alongside large ponds. The par-3 3rd and 17th are the pick of the short holes, where water also threatens.
Two consecutive doglegging par-4s at 14 and 15, both with large rolling greens, provide a tough examination at a critical stage of the round. So too the sharply doglegging par-4 10th, which marks the turn. The gently climbing finishing hole, another challenging par-4, requires a precise drive to set up the ideal approach into a two-tier green cut into the hillside.

The Faldo and O'Connor Jnr championship courses at Amendoeira Golf Resort, formerly carried the name of the Oceânico (golf and property) Group. The "Oceânico stable" also included five other courses in and around the seaside-marina town of Vilamoura. These five courses, namely the Old Course, Victoria (now Els Club), Laguna, Millennium and Pinhal, were subsequently operated by Dom Pedro Golf, before becoming separate Vilamoura courses.

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.
