Amendoeira Resort (O'Connor Jnr course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 2008

Amendoeira Golf Resort (O'Connor Jnr course): Located in the Amendoeira Golf Resort near Silves, this new Christy O'Connor Jnr design complements the neighbouring Faldo course. Both layouts take full advantage of their location in a broad fertile valley.

Small lakes, ponds and other assorted watercourses are spread throughout the O'Connor design, providing many wildlife sanctuaries, and demanding accuracy and good shot-making from golfers chasing a good score. In combination with the water features, the skilfully landscaped terrain, planted with mature palm–trees, imbues several holes with a lush ornamental character. Orange groves also attractively line some of the front-nine holes on this out-and-back design.

The water-protected fairways and greens of the par-4 7th, 8th and 9th holes provides the O'Connor layout with its testing "Amen Corner". Each one of these par-4s creates a watery challenge, with all three running alongside their own large pond. The par-3 3rd and 17th holes are the pick of the short holes, also with water threatening.

Two consecutive doglegging par-4s at 14 and 15, both with large rolling greens, provide a tough examination at a critical stage of the round. The gently climbing finishing hole, another challenging par-4, requires a precision drive to to set up the ideal approach into a two-tier green cut into the hillside.
