Quinta da Ria Golf Course: For those who think all the best golf courses on the Algarve are located west of Faro airport, think again. The 36-holes of Quinta da Ria and Quinta de Cima in the eastern Algarve are right up there with the best. In addition to being wonderfully natural, undeveloped (no housing around these courses) and superbly maintained, they provide an excellent test in great surroundings.
Quinta da Ria is slightly shorter and more compact than its sibling, but is also the more scenic, with stunning Atlantic ocean views, not least at the par-4 12th and par-3 13th which are closest to the sea. The layout starts with a very solid and immaculately maintained front-nine, with ancient olive and carob trees dotted around the wide swathes of short cut grass.
The wonderful back-nine takes you around the front-nine and out into a marvellous stretch of holes where water is a constant threat. The downhill par-3 17th, with one large bunker, an olive tree and plenty of water to the right is an absolute gem. Don't overlook Quinta da Ria, even if everyone tells you the bigger challenge is on Quinta de Cima.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.

Designed by American golf architect Rocky Roquemore, Quinta de Cima and its sister course Quinta da Ria are located alongside the Ria Formosa nature reserve in the Algarve (the southernmost region of mainland Portugal, and one noted for tourism and related activities). The Ria Formosa salt water lagoon, protected from the Atlantic Ocean by a system of barrier islands, stretches for over 50 km along the coastline of the eastern Algarve.
