Where2Golf says:

Vale do Lobo Golf Club (Royal course): The first three holes and some of the later ones on Vale do Lobo's Royal course are lined by neat white villas typical of this area. Like the villas, the course is usually presented in first-class condition; but its not the villa-lined holes you'll remember most. The majority of holes are played through a natural woodland of umbrella pines and fig trees, where rolling fairways, superb bunkering and excellent greens make this one of the Algarve's outstanding layouts. The par-3's, usually guarded by water, are all excellent; one of them is among the most photographed golf holes in Europe. The 16th, measuring a mere 230 yards from the back-tees, is set right next to the sea atop a line of crumbling red cliffs - with wind against it is both terrific and terrifying. The Royal course is not particularly hilly (unlike parts of its stable-mate, the Ocean course), but there are a few longish green-to-tee walks. If you are in the Algarve, Vale do Lobo's 36-holes are well worth including on your play list - you'll just need to dig a little deeper than usual to settle the rather pricey green-fee.

Did you know?

Vale do Lobo was among the first tourist destinations built in Portugal, following the building of Faro Airport in the early 1960s. Hotel and property chain Trust House Forte quickly stepped-in and acquired the land, which was transformed into the Vale do Lobo luxury resort. Townhouses and villas were built, along with the Dona Filipa hotel and two 18-hole Henry Cotton-designed golf courses. Vale do Lobo quickly became a popular destination with British holidaymakers.
