St Andrews Links (Eden Course)

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1914

St Andrews Links (Eden Course): The expansive dune land of St Andrews is home to the world's greatest concentration of links golf. Closest to the sea is the challenging Jubilee course. Next to it the excellent New Course. Then the mighty Old Course, and next to that the shorter but no less interesting Eden course. As the layout furthest from St Andrews Beach, the River Eden estuary is a much stronger scenic feature on the Eden course than is the North Sea, seen from the other courses.

The dunes on the Harry Colt designed Eden course are less pronounced than on its peers, but the layout and terrain no less undulating. The first three holes run alongside the Old Course. Like its revered neighbour, the Eden's firm links turf sits on a sandy base. The course benefits from excellent bunkering, the greens are fast and fiercely undulating and the chances to play bump and run shots abound.

Among many memorable holes on the Eden, the 5th and 8th, a pair of short par-3s, sit adjacent and parallel to each other. The 5th is played to the right of the largest dune on the course, the 8th goes in the same direction to the left of the dune. As a warm up prior to tackling St Andrews' more renowned layouts, or just for the fun of playing one of the area's lesser known (and less demanding) gems, don't miss out on the delightful Eden course.

Excellent

Did you know?

The Eden course takes its name from the River Eden estuary, which provides one of the course boundaries as well as home to a wonderful array of shoreline birds. Across the estuary you will see (and probably hear) the RAF base at Leuchars; also in view is the village of Guardbridge.
