St Andrews Links (Jubilee Course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1897

St Andrews' Jubilee Course was created in 1897 as a 12-hole layout, primarily intended for ladies and beginners. As with the city's New course (1895), the Jubilee was conceived in response to an explosion of interest in golf in the late 1800s.

The Jubilee, together with the Old and New courses, now forms part of a triumvirate of excellent championship layouts that occupy a wonderfully open area of sandy links land between St Andrews Beach and the River Eden estuary. The shorter Eden and Strathtyrum courses are also here, but top honours are invariably reserved for the Old, New and Jubilee.

The Jubilee fitted neatly into the remaining area of links land available on the beach side of the New Course. The course runs parallel with the beach, separated throughout its length by a 100-yard grassy strip and West Sands Road (a quiet beach access road). From the layout's more elevated tees and greens, especially around "the turn," you enjoy some of the best views of the North Sea and Eden estuary offered by any St Andrews course (although the new clifftop Castle course, on the other side of the city, now wins the "best views" accolade).

Following the classic out-and-back layout of its neighbours (Old, New and Eden), the turf here is firm and gently rippling, the bunkering excellent, and the greens fast and true. Chances to play bump and run shots abound. At times exuding a different feel from its Old and New peers, the Jubilee arguably has the greatest variety of holes, as well as some of the tightest and most challenging.

Holes like the short par-4 15th (Steel's Gem) demand great accuracy from the tee, before it wriggles up between the dunes to an elevated and well-defended green. Whereas rippling dunes and deep rough lie in wait beyond the tightish fairways on the front-nine, gorse bushes pose an even greater threat to wayward drives on the back-nine.

For many links golf aficionados, this is the most challenging layout of the St Andrews Links courses. Your A-game, a certain amount of local knowledge and favourable weather conditions will smooth your passage around the Jubilee. It's harder going if and when any of these are seriously lacking.

Did you know?

The Jubilee Course takes its name from Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897, marking 60 years on the throne and celebrated throughout her Empire.

Legendary St Andrews professional Wille Auchterlonie (1872-1963), who became the second youngest winner of the Open Championship (aged 21 yrs in 1893), was strongly of the opinion that the Jubilee would become the finest test of championship golf in St Andrews.

Published ranking

Britain & Ireland's 194th best course (Golf World, 2024).
