George
George Golf Club: With many new and stunning golf developments springing up along the Garden Route in recent years, there is still much to admire and enjoy at one of the area's older layouts.
George Golf club is an excellent parkland course, set against the stunning backdrop of the Outeniqua mountains. Plenty of mature trees of many varieties, as well as some more recent plantings, attractively line the fairways, while well-placed bunkers guard the often large and subtly sloping greens. The gently undulating front-nine gives way to some more pronounced elevation changes on the back-nine. Several holes are played from nicely elevated tees, not least the excellent signature hole, the 17th, which is often rated one of the best par-3s in South Africa.
Water is not a significant threat on the majority of this layout. That said, a small lake does come into play on the opening hole, a deceptively difficult short par-4, and again at the longer and very testing par-4 18th. Accurate driving will be needed to maximise scoring opportunities, although things generally don't get overly tight around this very pleasurable and mature parkland course.

Golf was first played in George back in 1886, since when the club and course have moved a few times. The current course was laid out in the early 1930s.
The city of George is the sixth oldest colonial town in South Africa, and was the first founded under British rule. Timber production from the vast Outeniqua forests was the main reason the Dutch East India Company established a woodcutters outpost on the site in 1776. It was originally named Georgetown, after the then reigning monarch, George III.
