Glendower Golf Club

4+ (4 gold): one of our top-rated 4-star courses, worthy of 4½ stars.
   Glendower Golf Club Est. 1937

Where2Golf says:

Glendower Golf Club: Johannesburg is home to a wonderful array of classic parkland golf courses, and Glendower is unquestionably one of its best. Like its near neighbour, Royal Johannesburg & Kensington, you are deep in the city's residential suburbs, but the stresses of the modern world quickly melt away in this golfing oasis. Here the more important and relaxing business of golf can take over.

This expansive and testing layout, graced with abundant birdlife and mature trees of many species, is a golfing venue full of charm and challenge. No less than 85 stylish bunkers line the way and defend the greens. On 11 of the 18 holes a variety of streams and ponds ensure the presence of water is never far away. On these holes especially, good course management and accurate hitting will be needed to avoid your ball making a splash.

The par-4 opening hole sets the tone in terms of the challenging length of many holes. As might be the case on later occasions in the round, your drive may leave you with a potentially long approach shot into a vigorously bunker-defended green. The tight tee-shot at the par-5 2nd, with water to carry before reaching the safety of the fairway, is one of the scariest drives you'll need to make. Thankfully the landing areas seem more generous on subsequent holes, especially on sections of the back-nine. This closing 9-hole loop gives a slightly more open feel than is the case on the more heavily tree-lined front-nine.

Longish holes and a tough test of golf is what you may remember about Glendower, but also the picturesque and natural parkland character of this Joburg gem. To tour the Glendower course click on the video below.

Did you know?

In 1935 ten Johannesburg businessmen joined together, formed a company and purchased the Glendower Farm, with the purpose of creating a Country Club. In 1937 their plans came to fruition, with the opening of the golf course, although plans for a polo pitch were abandoned due to the costs involved in levelling the ground. Since that time Glendower has hosted many top-level golf tournaments, not least the South African Open on several occasions. Vijay Singh added this prestigious title to his roll of honour by winning here in 1997 (see out Tournaments section >by Venue >Glendower). | In 1973 Glendower was declared a Nature Reserve due to the abundance of bird life in the club's grounds.

Where2Golf latest updates

Courses:

Muirfield: after 273 years, the Honourable Society of Edinburgh Golfers does the honourable thing and opens its doors to women members.
Harbour Town: Hilton Head Island’s No.1 course prepares to host the Heritage Classic (RBC Heritage) for the 49th time.

Tournaments:
Masters Tournament: first major championship of the men’s season ends (as ever) in high drama, and sees its third Spanish winner i.e. Sergio Garcia.
ANA Inspiration: first major of the year, and yet another example of an armchair viewer and shameful rules interpretations trampling on the true spirit of golf.

Who's Who:
Sergio Garcia: After 74 starts in major championships, and on the late Seve Ballesteros’s 60th birthday, Sergio wins his first major at Augusta National.
Lexi Thompson: deserving winner of a second major championship, but denied by the fiasco finish at the ANA Inspiration.
