Southbroom Golf Club

3-star: Good course – an enjoyable test for your game.

Est. 1938

Southbroom Golf Club: Located at the heart of the attractive Wild Coast community of Southbroom, this very enjoyable and always undulating parkland layout will thoroughly test your all-round game, not least if the wind is blowing in from the Indian Ocean.

Your first view of the sea comes spectacularly at the par-3 4th. This gem of a short hole has its tee-boxes virtually sitting on the rocky foreshore, and requires an accurate iron-shot onto the green just 114 metres along the beach.

With many short par-4s you might be forgiven for thinking that scoring here will be easy, but think again! Many holes bring water dangerously into play and several greens are protected by water crossing in front of them. From time to time the usually good-width fairways are replaced by much tighter demands from the tee, with trees and bushes lining the holes.

Occasionally, as you move from a green to the next tee, you will walk or drive through dense vegetation; although not directly in play, this jungle-like environment is home to the resident monkey population.

The ocean remains largely hidden behind a thick swathe of coastal vegetation, and occasionally some real estate, but it can be seen from some of the course's higher elevations (stunningly so at the par-4 13th) and of course at the beach-hugging, signature 4th hole. Maintenance standards are generally good at Southbroom, with excellent quality greens on which to practice the fine art of putting.

Did you know?

Southbroom GC very helpfully puts small name labels on many of their trees, enabling you to identify the wonderful variety of species that line the course. Among those we identified are: palms of many varieties (including a fabulous royal palm at the par-3 11th), sparsely-leafed coral trees, tall norfolk pines, unusually-shaped milkwoods, umdoni trees and the green-barked fever tree.

The community of Southbroom dates back to 1884, when Alfred Eyles established a mission here. His sons Frank and Gilbert are acknowledged as the town's founders. Southbroom's golf course started life as a 9-hole layout, established in 1939 by Frank Eyles. It was extended to 18-holes in 1948.
