The Country Club Johannesburg (Woodmead course)

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1906

The Country Club Johannesburg (Woodmead course): Regarded as the No.1 course here at the prestigious Country Club of Johannesburg, the older Woodmead layout is arguably more aesthetically pleasing and, in golfing terms, more challenging than the newer Rocklands course.

In keeping with its sibling, the Woodmead starts with fine views and relatively open terrain; however, the family resemblances become less obvious as you move onto the fabulous downhill par-5 3rd. This beautifully sculpted hole (one of many), demands a very accurate second shot as it brings you down into a picturesque area where trees rather than grassy rough line the holes.

Most of the front and back-nine holes are laid out in this more wooded environment, where real estate is conspicuous by its absence. If the trees give this course a tighter feel than the Rocklands, then several strategically located, lily-filled water hazards will also keep you on your toes. The excellent downhill par-4 17th, for example, is a difficult right-to-left dogleg par-4 which wraps around a small lake - both your tee and approach shots hold out the possibility of getting wet!

At 7,500 yards from the back tees, and with large, fast and undulating greens to test your putting skills, there are few more memorable and testing layouts to be played around Johannesburg than the very handsome and wonderfully natural Woodmead course.
