Montecastillo
Montecastillo Golf & Sports Resort: Laid out next to the Circuito de Jerez motor-racing circuit, this relatively recent Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course, opened for play in 1992. It quickly established championship credentials, hosting the European Tour's Volvo Masters several times in its early years.
The course itself gives an open and expansive feel, with the boldly designed holes laid out on the "sherry producing" hills of Jerez. In classic Nicklaus-style, the bunkering is impressive and the greens large and fast. Several good size water hazards threaten, especially alongside the short par-4 7th and 10th holes, as well as the closing par-4 17th and 18th duo.
Some nicely elevated teeing positions culminate with a dramatically elevated tee-shot at the signature par-4 closing hole, which sweeps down and alongside the large resort hotel.
The layout's higher elevations provide scenic views onto the surrounding hills and open countryside. On occasions you'll also look across to the historic city of Jerez, renowned as the sherry capital of the world, as well as a centre for equestrian activities and flamenco dancing.
The Montecastillo layout contains one or two longish green-to-tee walks, while the construction of a few villas alongside the course does not detract unduly from the scenic golfing challenge that awaits.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance. Maximum handicap: men 28; women 36. Proof of handicap required.
Walking permitted. Golf carts (fitted with GPS) available for hire, and must be booked in advance. Golf carts are compulsory until 11am.
